ABDOMINOPLASTY (TUMMY TUCK)

Overview

tummy-tuckAn Abdominoplasty, also known as a “Tummy Tuck”, is a popular procedure performed by Dr. Fazilat to reduce the appearance of a protruding abdomen by flattening and contouring the abdomen and waist. In fact, the number of Tummy Tuck procedures continues to grow dramatically annually, from 60,000 in 2000 to more than 156,000 performed in 2012.

The best candidates for Tummy Tuck surgery have pockets of fat or loose, sagging skin that have not responded well to diet and/or exercise, or whose abdomens have been stretched out because of pregnancy, weight fluctuations, or weakened stomach muscles.

During the Tummy Tuck procedure, excess fat and skin is removed and the muscles of the abdominal wall are tightened, resulting in a flatter abdomen and a more natural shape. An abdominoplasty does leave a permanent scar just above the pubic area, but it is most often concealed by a bikini or by low-cut underwear.

The Consult

During your initial Tummy Tuck consultation with Dr. Fazilat, he will discuss the options and alternatives in great detail, providing you with all the information you need to make an informed decision about an Abdominoplasty or Tummy Tuck. The site of the incisions will also be discussed prior to your Tummy Tuck surgery, which is typically placed very low on your stomach. Any caesarian scars can be removed during surgery.

Pre-Operative

Our Cosmetic Consultant can provide you with information on pre-operative Tummy Tuck care, recovery, local accommodations, and answer any other questions related to your procedure and stay in the Morgan Hill / Cupertino / Palo Alto / Mountain View, CA area. If you are traveling from outside the US, we highly recommend that you purchase travel insurance.

Once you have booked your Tummy Tuck surgery, Dr. Fazilat’s office will coordinate the location and time of your Tummy Tuck surgery. You will receive a pre-operative appointment, which is typically two weeks before your surgery. During this appointment, you will be given instructions for your surgery, as well as any medical request forms for necessary blood work or related medical tests. Dr. Fazilat will also take any pre-operative photos and review your planned procedure(s) so you can ask any final questions. Our office will contact you by phone or by email to review your instructions and your health history.

After your pre-operative appointment, if you have any questions regarding your instructions, you can contact our office by phone or email us at any time. General Surgery instructions can also be found in Patient Resources of our website and you can download these Abdominoplasty Post-Op Instructions (PDF).

About The Operation

Tummy Tuck surgery is a common procedure that Dr. Fazilat performs in his practice. Typically, operations are performed as an out-patient procedure under general anesthesia with a certified anesthesiologist; surgical times are 2 to 3.5 hours.

During the surgery, Dr. Fazilat will make two incisions: one from hipbone to hipbone and the other around the navel. He will then separate your skin in from the abdominal muscles, which would then be pulled together and stitched into place for a firmer abdomen and a narrower waist. Your skin flap is then stretched down and over the newly tightened muscles, whereby excess skin is removed, and the navel is reattached into a natural position. Drainage tubes are placed at the incision site to collect excess blood or fluid for 10-14 days after surgery.

Some of Dr. Fazilat’s patients also have their Tummy Tuck surgery combined with other procedures, such as a breast augmentation, breast lift, a Mommy Makeover, or laser liposuction for a more beautiful overall appearance.

Recovery

After Tummy Tuck surgery, our patients are encouraged to walk the evening of your surgery to prevent possible blood clots. Patients can typically return to work within 10 to 14 days, though strenuous activity should be avoided for 4 weeks. The patient should also have an adult stay with them for 24 hours following the surgery to monitor their recovery.

Drains are removed 10 to 14 days after Tummy Tuck surgery. Absorbable sutures and medical grade super glue is used in all cases. This results in a dry and clean incision and no suture removal! Any post-operative pain, swelling and/or sensitivity will commonly diminish over the first few weeks. Finally, scars from Tummy Tuck incisions begin to fade in a few months but can be concealed with clothing or a bikini.

Dr. Fazilat will schedule a follow-up post-recovery office visit to discuss your progress.
