A BREAST REDUCTION PROCEDURE BY SHAHIN FAZILAT, MD: WHY SMALLER IS OFTEN BETTER

Overview

Breast reduction, also known as reduction mammaplasty, is one of the most frequently performed cosmetic surgery procedures in the U.S. Dr. Fazilat’s patients elect to have breast reduction surgery because of shoulder, neck or back pain, discomfort while sleeping, rashes under trapped skin, an inability to participate in certain sports because of breast size, or a feeling of self-consciousness.

Breast reduction for women is a very popular procedure because there are far more benefits than just an improved physical appearance. These include improved clothing fit, less shoulder and back pain, and more symmetry for anyone who had breasts of different sizes.

Breast reduction surgery removes your skin, fat, and glandular tissue to improve the breast’s shape, decreasing the size and enhancing the aesthetic balance of a woman’s upper torso.

The Consult

During your breast reduction consultation with Dr. Fazilat, he will discuss the procedure in great detail, providing you with all the information you need to make an informed decision about breast reduction.

Dr. Fazilat will ask you if:

  • Your breasts are creating medical problems such as neck, shoulder or back pain
  • Your posture is also being affected
  • You’re losing sleep because of breast discomfort when lying down
  • You develop rashes and/or infections on the trapped skin under your large breasts
  • You’re unable to participate in certain sports because of breast size
  • You feel self-conscious about your breast size

Dr. Fazilat will personally walk you through your options and share recommendations based on the latest research, advances in the field, and what’s best for your particular case, including:

  • Size
  • Shape
  • Scar location

Once you have booked your breast reduction surgery, Dr. Fazilat’s office will coordinate the location and time of your breast reduction surgery. During this appointment, you will be given instructions for your surgery, as well as any medical request forms for necessary blood work or related medical tests. Dr. Fazilat will also take any pre-operative photos and review your planned procedure(s) so you can ask any final questions. Our office will contact you by phone or by email to review your instructions and your health history.

After your pre-operative appointment, if you have any questions regarding your instructions, you can contact our office by phone or email us at any time. General Surgery instructions can also be found in Patient Resources of our website and you can download these Breast Augmentation Post-Op Instructions (PDF).

About The Operation

Breast reduction surgery is one of the most common procedures that Dr. Fazilat performs in his practice. Typically, these operations are performed as an out-patient procedure under general anesthesia with a certified anesthesiologist; surgical times are 3 to 4 hours, but can vary depending on your breast size.

Some of Dr. Fazilat’s patients also have their breast reduction surgery combined with other procedures, such as a tummy tuck or laser liposuction for an enhanced outcome and more self-confidence.

Recovery

After breast reduction surgery, it is typical for our patients to feel tired and sore; however, this soreness usually passes in a day or two with many patients returning to work within a week, though strenuous activity should be avoided for up to four weeks. Patients may often go home that day, while some require an overnight stay. The patient should also have an adult stay with them for 24 hours following the surgery to monitor their recovery.

Stitches are removed a week after two to three weeks after breast reduction surgery. Any post-operative pain, swelling and/or sensitivity will commonly diminish over the first few weeks. Finally, scars from breast reduction incisions begin to fade in a few months and continue to fade for months or years to come.

Dr. Fazilat will schedule a follow-up post-recovery office visit to discuss your progress.
